Lampe Berger has produced thousands of lamps and commissioned lamps over the past 100 years. Many of the earlier pieces are considered quite rare and very valuable. Many of these pieces were commissions of the famous glass and porcelain makers of the time. Each piece has had a limited production run. Some pieces are signed and numbered, but most are not. Once a production run is finished, be it 150 pieces or usually up two to four years of production, the piece is considered retired. This means that Lampe Berger has not opened production of the piece again in the exact same form to our knowledge. One example of a remake is the famous P. Amphore Bacarat Crystal of the early 20th century. The piece returned in 2000, as a similar design by the art director of Lampe Berger Regis Dho, the Athena series in glass. It is similar, but not the same piece. We have been told that once a production run is stopped the piece will never be made again in the exact same form.
What does this mean to you as a collector of the famous art of Lampe Berger? Well, it is simple supply and demand. When a production run is ended, there is no more supply of the particular piece to the market. Based on the past performance, values have been stable or have increased over time. This is particularly true for some of the more rare Signature Series Lampes. The Beadcage as a rule does not increase the price of retired pieces although at some point in time, we may. Some sellers do increase the price of retired pieces and this is a good thing for the market and for collectors of the Lampe Berger Lampes. There are some uneducated retailers who do not understand the above concepts who may discount these pieces. This results in a special buying opportunity and The Beadcage, although we would like your business, would recommend you purchase a significant discount on any quality Lampe Berger piece. Caveat Emptor, let the buyer be ware. Before purchasing at discounts considered too good to be true we would recommend making sure that the piece is what it is supposed to be and that it comes intact with all parts included in the original box.
Why does The Beadcage not discount discontinued pieces? Well, first off, these are pieces of art and using the word discontinued would be considered a mistaken description. First, there is no reason to discount retired pieces. The market will bear our limited supply of these retired pieces at their current price and as a rule, these pieces all sell within one to three years of retirement. As these pieces become more rare, the values will increase. We feel it dishonest to the market and to our customers who purchased these pieces at our full original price to then discount the price when the piece retires just to get stock out of the store. Also, customers would just wait until pieces retire to purchase them at a discount. You will never find a Lampe you purchased at The Beadcage selling for less than the price you paid unless Lampe Berger authorizes a special. To our knowledge, this has never happened with the Signature Pieces. The Beadcage has one of the largest selections of new and retired pieces of Lampe Berger fragrance lamps in the world on display everyday of the year at our showrooms in Columbus Georgia. There is not a day that goes by that we do not have a new or out of town customer telling us they have never seen as vast a collection of Lampe Berger anywhere. We have Lampe Berger experts available to assist in obtaining very old retired pieces not found in the USA. We can help you value any antique Lampe Berger Lampe you may have if you are wondering what it may be worth.
